Gov. Healey Issues Proclamation Honoring Philippine Independence Day in Massachusetts
Annual observance recognizes Filipino American contributions to the state’s culture, economy and communities
BOSTON — Gov. Maura Healey has proclaimed June 12 as Philippine Independence Day in Massachusetts, honoring the history and contributions of Filipino Americans across the state. The proclamation comes as Filipino American communities prepare to mark the occasion with events organized by PAMANA (Philippine American Mainstream Advocacy for Nonpartisan Associations, Inc.)
The governor’s proclamation reflects on the long-standing ties between the Philippines and the United States, which date back to 1898, when the Philippines was ceded to the United States under the Treaty of Paris. The Philippines remained a U.S. territory until 1945 and served as a key ally during World War II.
“For over 100 years, Filipino immigrants have enriched our nation's culture and economy,” the proclamation states. “Filipino Americans contribute greatly to Massachusetts in the areas of nursing, business, technology, science, medicine, law, journalism, education and the arts.”
The governor also expressed gratitude to Filipino Americans for their role in shaping the diverse culture and economy of Massachusetts.
“We are deeply grateful to Gov. Healey for this recognition,” said Jelyn Masa, board president of PAMANA Inc. “Philippine Independence Day is both a celebration of our heritage and an opportunity to honor the countless ways Filipino Americans strengthen our communities.”
PAMANA will host several events to mark this year’s celebration. Each year, these events bring together hundreds of community members, civic leaders and partners to celebrate Filipino culture, honor the community’s achievements and strengthen connections across Massachusetts.
